A House Built on Sand

The recent arrest of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy made a lot of allegations moot and academic as many of the claims of violations of human rights rested on the premise that he was no longer in the KOJC Compound. It was alleged that the police tasked to arrest him were to many and have used excessive force which against the members of the church.

It was a battle of wits between two rooks as Gen. Torre and Atty. Torreon clashed about the legality of actions and alleged violation of human rights. Of course, even in the senate, Senator Hontiveros was opposed by the Duterte block of senators trying to protect the pastor. But even on the Davao hearing of the alleged violation of human rights, Gen. Nicolas Torre stood his ground as a good soldier fulfilling his duty for the republic even before Senator “Bato” de la Rosa. In the end, given a 24-hour memorandum PACQ sent feelers of surrender but to dramatize his contempt for the PNP, he asked for the army to receive him instead.

The ISAF, the army intelligence group came to fetch him but they in turn, much perhaps to his dismay, turned him over to the police. Finally, the policemen could go home back to their families. The conflicting parties; KOJC members and the police; both feeling relieved, embraced each other in the turn of events which PACQ interpreted as his sacrifice so that the members of his church would no longer suffer the presence of the police. On the other hand, the President who is the Commander-in-Chief who knows every detail of the operations, however, said that he had to surrender because he was already cornered and had no other recourse.

Quiboloy was arrested at the ACQ College, bible school within the KOJC 30-hectare compound near the Davao City airport along with some key supporters. Said complex houses the Jose Maria College, the ACQ College of Ministries, the KOJC King’s Dome, the SMNI Studios and the Apollo Air Hangar which houses his planes and helicopter. ACQ are obviously, the pastor’s initials.

Jose Maria College apparently, is named after his parents: Jose Turla Quiboloy, a protestant from the Christian Missionary Alliance and Maria Quinto Carreon. The father and his sons would later join the United Pentecostal Church with the siblings eventually becoming preachers enjoying bible college scholarships. As a poor peasant migrant from Lubao, Pampanga, the father saw an opportunity for the siblings to be educated. Perhaps the names of his parents subconsciously sparked the messianic complex in the youngest son whose first dreams were either to become a pilot or a nautical engineer. It is not common that one’s parents would be named Jose and Maria, just like what the original and Only-Begotten Son of God did have. However, the son born to them on April 25, 1950 (others claim 1947) was not named Jesus but instead given the name Apollo from the Greco-Roman god and also Mt. Apo. With the Oneness Pentecostal Church, he found biblical studies enjoyable such that he earned the epithet : ”the preaching machine” when he became pastor. He was sent to Seoul to an international conference where he listened to Billy Graham, American televangelist of world fame but who later succumbed to a scandal of the flesh.

This event motivated him well and in fact, upon his return he had a mystical experience when he was invited by a mysterious person to a motel where just before midnight the ceiling of the room dissolved and the starry sky appeared before God spoke to him. He was however sanctioned for being haughty to the detriment of co-pastors which he characterized to followers as “incompetent and ignorant”. He was returned to his former stature when he apologized. However, the same thing happened after sometime in 1985 but when he was going to be censured again by the church hierarchy, he and about 15 of his followers bolted the church and started his own denomination on September 1 of the same year, this is the KOJC. This is reinforced by a mystical experience in Mt. Kitbog in Sarangani province where he was called to become His chosen, “the appointed Son of God.”

Prosperity came to him as he was anointed with the angels coming to pour oil drenching him down to his toes. Aside from the KOJC Compound near the Francisco Bangoy airport, he acquired the “prayer mountain” site in Mt. Tamayong which was his “Eden restored”. Acquisition of this property however became controversial since he was trying to purchase his paradise regained from K’lita-Bagobo chief Datu Dominador Diarog for 50,000 pesos and he refused through Quiboloy henchman Greg Canada. After the failed purchase, harassment was attempted four times on the farm. Canada was bent on succeeding just in time for Quiboloy’s birthday on the 25th but he was thwarted. Then his house was strafed while family slept and Dominador was immediately killed. The attempt of massacre failed and the wife and children wounded were able to escape with the son, Diolito divulging the incident. The 33 K’lita-Bagobo neighbor families abandoned their ancestral land in Kahusayan ( not meaning excellence but denoting land of dispute in Visayan) and picketed Davao City Hall for help but no one helped the indigenous people. The hill where the home of the Datu once stood became central to the Quiboloy glory mountain, an attempt to restore paradise on earth.

Earlier than this, a family in Sitio Dalagdag in Calinan was also massacred according to the Vera Files. The acquisition of these lots saw the army engineering corps bulldozing and fencing the crime sites for development with soldiers acting as security men. Two of the Diarog nephews were also approached with 100,000 for their homesteads but with the additional instruction of killing uncle Datu Dogris who picketed for help. Even the usually just NPA who fight for the underdogs were silent.

It is not the wish of this writer to delve anymore into the many allegations of crimes made by PACQ here and abroad. I just mentioned the most primordial and heinous crimes he possibly must have done and which of course he vehemently denies. It is not our wish to be redundant here, rather we would like us to explore the mystical side of PACQ. On this, we have asked our mystic brother to relate to the etymology of the words associated to his calling.

First on his name: he was named after the mountain Apo which is a mystical mountain layered with many elemental inhabitants. Anyone of these demons could have easily fooled him into believing that he was speaking to God for his calling. Apo actually could stand for Alpha and Omega which is why his beginning and end would be manifested for mankind to learn. Mount Tamayong’s name means to “stand tall” in Binisaya probably instilling in him more arrogance in his belief that he owns the universe. Mount Kitbog’s name means “heartbeat” in Binisaya which could allude to a very emotional decision. Apollo, the Greco-Roman mythical god like Quiboloy had so many interests and could even make Zeus-Jupiter insecure. This would explain the haughtiness which the Pentecostal leaders saw in him. His complete name is Apollo Carreon Quiboloy and thus we only have the two surnames yet to explore. Carreon could be another rendition for carrion which is meat unfit for consumption alluding to his lust and carre reon or a region squared alluding to avarice to acquire property. The word qui may mean “who is” of Hispanic origin and boloy could mean “tonto” or a fool. Another meaning is to move or remove the law or remove with a spade. This would simply mean to move (kibo)with a narrow spade or to remove what is lawful. The terrible interpretation of this is to bury (with a narrow spade-loy) what is lawful (loi). The worst translation of kibo is to bullshit out; which would mean to bullshit out the law or at the least, move foolishly. Kibol on the other hand is either throb or bobtail. We have already the rendition of heartbeat while a hairy tail may allude to something deceptive or diabolical. This writer simply reflects what our mystic resource person said and leaves the reader to decide what impact they have, in fact.

Lastly, without using Burnay or the language of elementals after the fall of the tower of Babel he analyzed the name of the location of the KOJC compound and this is what he shared: the place is in Catitipan, in Buhangin, Davao City. According to him Catitipan means a deposit or covenant in Visayan while Buhangin obviously mean sand. Therefore, to him, the KOJC Compound had with it a covenant and deposit of knowledge which is based on lies and foolishness. Suffice to say that he meant PACQ is a charlatan teaching worthless doctrines. Which strikes me as I remember the Lord’s Parable on building a house. One that is built on the rock like Masada and Petra would persist even today from the ancient times. But for those built on the shifting sand, they are bound to be lost easily in just one desert storm.

I am sad for the KOJC members who actually believed Quiboloy was actually the “Appointed Son of God” not because he could not show any appointment papers but to simply believe in a story as in istoryahe is simply absurd. With this precedence, anyone now could claim he is an appointed something of God. May I now posit some premises, so that we can do reductio ad absurdum:

  1. Quiboloy’s appointment as Son of God makes him equal to Jesus Christ but Jesus is the Only-Begotten Son so Heaven can only be wrong if such an appointment is true.
  2. As the “Appointed Son of God”, his arrogance is in direct conflict with Jesus Christ’s meekness and humility.
  3. As Owner of the Universe, he did not have to buy aircraft or come up with air hangar named after him. In fact, an air hangar may preclude a fire hangar because the word air had still to be used. Cherubins could have easily given him travel access.
  4. As Owner of the Universe, he does not have to acquire lots and if he were to restore Eden, it should not just be a botanical garden but must also have fauna therein, at least representatives of those which survived the great flood.
  5. His prophecy on Eli Soriano’s death did not materialize and showed his vindictive spirit against one who exposes his being a false prophet (e.g. Gilbert Teodoro’s being chosen by God to become President of the Philippines).
  6. His take on Vice Ganda’s challenge on Ang Probinsiyano’s airing trivialized his being Son of God. The comedian said that perhaps he can also stop the airing of the popular series since he claimed he could stop earthquakes. The end of the ABS-CBN franchise is not supernatural. Besides as “owner of the universe” he failed to protect his SMNI.
  7. Jesus Christ did not study in a bible college.
  8. Quiboloy, a protestant who does not give due veneration to the Virgin Mary, the Virgin of Virgins, seem to have fallen out of Our Lady’s grace. Resolution 884 by Sen. Risa Hontiveros came after the feast of Our Lady of Loreto (Dec. 10) and before the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12). He was also arrested on Sept. 8 which is Our Lady’s natal day.
  9. Why would the “Son of God” request for a hospital arrest in Davao after arraignment as if health is an issue for someone divine?
  10. Why does he choose the life of a fugitive wanted by FBI if he is indeed the Son of God who fulfills what seems not to be fulfilled by the Christ?
  11. The Real Redeemer faced all His accusers willingly and humbly both local (Caiphas, Annas, etc.-Jews) and foreign (Pontius Pilate- Roman) to fulfill His redemption of mankind and to manifest the Truth but Quiboloy evasively and arrogantly avoided both local (Senate, PNP) and foreign (FBI) accusers. He meant to bullshit out the law.
  12. The Real Messiah chose to live a simple humble life among the poor and his friends were common people. Quiboloy’s friends are people in power such as politicians and military leaders.
  13. The Savior stripped himself of His Divinity to be with and to serve mankind. Quiboloy flaunted his assumed divinity to be served by the people.
  14. Jesus when tempted in the wilderness by the devil was offered all the kingdoms of the world while Quiboloy tempted himself by building his own kingdom on the pretext that he is equal to Jesus Christ.
  15. Anyone who claims to be Christ or assumes divinity which is the opposite of what Christ did (stripping himself of Divine nature and simply came to be referred to as the Son of Man) is an anti-Christ.

Despite the mounting pressure from so many personalities trying to benefit from the gesture of being protector of human rights and even from his alleged former church, Gen. Nicolas D. Torre III, the arresting police officer, never wavered. In fact, before the ultimatum which brought about the surrender, he had already observed that Quiboloy was the only sole male resident in a building full of women. Many years ago, Kris Aquino for her program, queried about the same thing and Quiboloy simply said that he was simply a man so “accommodating.” There are many more premises which can be posited but this writer believes these would suffice for our purposes.

What strikes this writer most is his complaint that KOJC parents are sending their daughters to him to become his wives because of his wealth. As Pastor to the KOJC flock, he must be teaching the wrong values to his church members for them to do this. This lame excuse for having the girls housed with him is surrealistic in nature. Why would he accept the girls in the first place if he could discern this parental madness?
