The Holy Trinity
Most Protestants believed in the Holy Trinity which shows that God has three persona, God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ) and God the Holy Spirit. But some protestants don’t believe in this. They often preach that the Trinity of the Catholic Church means Three Gods, which often misunderstood by others including the Catholics whom is lack of Catechism. This protestant teaching is wrong. We Catholics believed in one God, but has three personas. Let’s give an example from a fictional comic book, Bruce Wayne is a millionaire businessman, but he has another persona during the night which he is the Batman. Another example, A married and working man has more than one persona. One, he is a husband, second, he is a father, third, he is the child of his father, therefore he is a son, four he is a manager and so on. The proof of the Holy Trinity can also be found in the bible:
“In the beginning God created heaven, and earth. And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved over the waters. And God said: Be light made. And light was made.”
– Genesis 1:1-4
Here we will see the trace of the Holy Trinity, God (Father), Spirit (Holy Spirit) and the word “said” (the Word of God, the Son). Also in Genesis:
“He said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth.
– Genesis 1:26
Here, we will see that God said “Let’s us make”. Protestants often mistake that God created Adam and Eve with the angels which is not. God solely created man with no angels involve. The “Us” that God mentioned is His two persona.
Here’s another proof that Jesus and God are one in these bible verses:
In the Old Testament, God said to Moses:
“I am who am.”
Exodus 3:14
While in the New Testament:
“Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.”
-John 8:58
Here, we will see that God called Himself “I AM”, then Jesus called Himself “I AM” to the Jews. And in also in the Gospel of St. John:
“I and the Father are one.
John 10:30
Our Lord has no direct words saying that He is God, but He often gives a hint. Some protestants also didn’t believe that Jesus Christ is God, but only a son of God born of the Virgin Mary which means he is pure Man. This statement was from the protestants who called themselves “Messenger of God” or an angel incarnate so they can make themselves higher than Christ.
Remember, God is God. He can do whatever He wants. If He wants to be a Father, He is the Father. If He wants to be a Son, He is the Son. If he wants to be the Holy Spirit, He is the Holy Spirit.
The Two Natures of Christ
This may also part of the Holy Trinity subject but we must make clear about the Two Natures of our Lord. Jesus Christ has two natures, one divine and the other is human. This nature become a debate in the fifth century when Nestorianism reject these two natures. And some protestants also believed this Heresy. As a human, our thoughts are human where we think that we are human in nature and cannot become another creature, we cannot become a dog, a cat, a bird and especially a God. But God is different. He has many ways to make the impossible to become possible. In short, a miracle. Jesus Christ is God, to prove this, let’s go back at the first verse of the Gospel of John:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”
If we read carefully, it stated:
“Word was God“. And then in John 1:14: “And the Word was made flesh“
And the Word was made flesh is our Lord Jesus Christ. Since the Word is Jesus, He is God because of the statement “The Word was God”. God himself chose to become a man so He will suffer and died to save us from our sins, because God loves us.
Brethren, God created us and every creature, places and things on this earth. Despite for our sins that continued to offend Him, He still continues to love us through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, let’s not questioned Him or His nature. What is important is in our everyday life, we must thank him for everything he gave to us, apologize and repent for the sins that we’ve done, and to worship Him especially in the Holy Mass. We are in Him.
