The Guardian Angels and the Holy Mass

Our Guardian Angel is always on our side, protecting us and also, they are with us when we attend the Holy Mass, kneeling before the Body of Christ, the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Many saints send their Guardian Angels on various errands when they were physically unable to do so such as praying at the church.

One of the very known stories of sending the Guardian Angel is on the life of St. Padre Pio, when Father Alessio saw St. Padre Pio sitting alone with a rosary on his hand on the veranda, he thought it is the right opportunity to go over some mail with him. But when the priest put a question to him from a letter, the saint response that he is very busy and cannot answer a question. Father Alessio was confused because it obvious for him that St. Padre Pio is not busy. Until the saint told him that they are many guardian angels at that day and they are sending messages from his spiritual children. In this story, people are sending their guarding angels to St. Padre Pio.

If we are unable to attend the Holy Mass physically, we can send our Guardian Angel to attend on our behalf. But remember, we cannot send them if we are lazy to attend or you just want to attend unimportant events that is conflict to the schedule of the Holy Mass. The Holy Mass is a very important sacrament that God gave us. It has the Body of Christ on the Blessed Sacrament, where we can unite with Him on the Holy Communion. If you can physically attend the mass, please do so.

Here is a prayer for sending your Guardian Angel to the Holy Mass that was dated from 1920s.

O Holy Angel at my side, go to Church for me, kneel in my place, at Holy Mass, where I desire to be. At Offertory, in my stead, take all
I am and own, and place it as a sacrifice upon the Altar Throne.

At Holy Consecration’s bell, adore with Seraph’s love, my Jesus hidden in the Host, come down from Heaven above. Then pray for those I dearly love, and those who cause me grief, that Jesus’ Blood may cleanse all hearts, and suffering souls relieve.

And when the priest Communion takes, oh, bring my Lord to me, that His sweet Heart may rest on mine, and I His temple be. pray that this Sacrifice Divine, may mankind’s sins efface; then bring me Jesus’ blessing home, the pledge of every grace. Amen.

The Power of St. Michael Against Evil and Darkness

That is why the feast of St. Michael with the other six archangels is perfectly placed on September 29. During this season, daytime becomes shorter, falling near the equinox, nighttime is longer and colder especially in countries in the north. God and the Holy Catholic Church really has a way to fortify its liturgical days.

Saint Padre Pio said, “You will need the help of St. Michael living in this world.” It is true that in this day and age where people forget to go to church and pray, we need St. Michael in our daily lives.

The Bible mentions the importance of St. Michael and the angels in heaven because of the struggles and dangers we face in life..
For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. Ephesians 6:12

But the prince of the kingdom of the Persians resisted me one and twenty days: and behold Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, and I remained there by the king of the Persians. Daniel 10:13

And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought with his angels: And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And that great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan who seduced the whole world; and he was cast unto the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Revelation 12: 7-9

The great battle written in Revelation just shows how significant St. Michael and the archangels were as they defended heaven and God from the pride-driven angels who lost their luster when they were cast out. The fallen ones lost their place in heaven and lurked in the dark for all eternity.

That is why the prayer of St. Michael the Archangel is much needed today to protect us from the fallen ones. The prayer was composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1884 as a result of a vision in which he heard a voice believed to be God and the Devil. Because of the incident, he wrote the prayer and ordered it to be recited by the faithful.

Today is the feast of St. Michael and other Archangels, we are in the last quarter of the year, a time when the night is longer, colder and darker. A season to remind us again that God gave us mighty protectors to give us hope always. At times our intuition feels that we are in danger and unsure of our surroundings, never hesitate to invoke St. Michael and the archangels, or our guardian angels. Keep by heart the Prayer of St. Michael to protect our body and soul from elements be it seen and unseen.

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
Saint Michael the archangel, defend us on the day of battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell ,Satan, and all the evil spirits who roam, throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

God Heals Through St. Raphael

In this time of crisis , many people have experienced numerous restraints and challenges in their lives, resulting in considerable effects on their mental and physical well-being. To name a few, COVID-19, natural calamities and recurring disasters, and tremendous amounts of human sickness and at death’s door are some of the reasons behind the undesired state of several people throughout this pandemic. These situations contribute to the burden of other fellow men and various industries in our country which alters the superb position of our economy to a predicament. In addition to that, the conditions of folks globally who are experiencing similar problems are affected, too. To support such a claim, the issues faced by our citizens also influenced the entire society’s wholeness. Consequences upon consequences. How will the world heal from all these misfortune occurrences?

In trials and desperate times, people turn to existing and fast ways to solve their daily dilemmas. Relevantly, the public seeks antidotes to cure illnesses brought by different infectious diseases and viruses present nowadays. With that , the commonality instantly proceeds to their mobiles, spending hours and hours on sundry search engines and social media platforms to find the right solution to the problems they are encountering. Fortunately, they arrive with multiple answers to their queries. But the real question is, are these the right solutions to the problem and the right things to do?

Many citizens at present forget countless things. As Catholics, the only thing we either fail to remember or do not do regularly is prayer. Prayers are acts of religious belief to call God and other heavenly beings for guidance, protection, and other matters of high importance (religiously speaking). Prayers serve as our armor and shield against all possible events, whether good or bad, which may transpire in our lives.

Since we are experiencing a global pandemic, the majority of sick people lack such an act. Even basic prayers like the Hail Mary and Our Father could make a difference in you and your physical and spiritual life. Do not just use your devices to look for solutions with lifelong effects for your everyday needs. Ask for help from God and His servants above without hesitation! If you are afraid to communicate to God directly through prayers, ask angels and saints to bring your prayers to God. They will also shower you with grace and blessing upon calling them. One saint that you may call during times like this is Saint Raphael the Archangel.

Saint Raphael the Archangel is one of the seven archangels who lead God’s celestial army and His servants in heaven. His name Raphael means God heals (In Hebrew, Rafael means God has healed me). He, together with the other archangels, guards and protects people who inhabit the earth. He is one of the only three archangels in the Bible mentioned by name (Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael).

Saint Raphael the Archangel has roles assigned to him by God, just like the rest of the seven archangels. His mission is to heal the world which the angels have defiled. In other words, he is the one who spreads healing to people worldwide, tarnished by the angels who have fallen, and aids the needs of God’s creations globally.

He is stated in the Bible in the Old Testament, particularly in the Book of Tobit. Here, it says that he camouflaged in the human flesh. As a human, Saint Raphael the Archangel is recognized as Azarias. As stated in the Bible, Azarias is the son of the great Ananias. He journeyed earth with Tobit’s son, Tobias, which means God is good (some sources refer to him as Tobiah or by the diminutive Tobiel).
Before knowing Saint Raphael the Archangel (disguised as Azarias), Tobias left his place to travel to Media. He did this not only to collect an old debt from a distant relative but to utilize this money as a source of funding to treat his father, Tobit, who became blind. But before going on his trip, Tobias met Azarias outside their house.

Azarias and Tobit continued to travel. Upon arriving at the river Tigris, they resided there. As Tobias went to the river to bathe himself, a fish jumped toward him, which would have eaten him. Azarias commanded him to get the fish. Tobias did such and took it to land. Azarias then told him to open the fish. He asked Tobias to take the heart, liver, and gall of the fish. After such, he asked him to raise these safely afterward. This scene shows how God loves, guides, and protects each one of us through His angels or heavenly servants. Moreover, Saint Raphael the Archangel, camouflaged as Azarias, depicts a metaphor in life that guardian angels are always there to join and accompany us whenever or wherever possible. They carried on back to Tobias’ house. After reaching home, Azarias told Tobias to anoint his father’s eyes. With the gall obtained from the fish, he cured Tobit’s blindness through Saint Raphael the Archangel, still disguised as Azarias. Upon seeing everything, including his son, Tobit became grateful to the Lord, fell into tears, and rejoiced in the glory of God and the angels. In another story, through Saint Rafael, the Archangel, the demon Asmodeus found in Tobias’ wife, Sarah, is immediately cast away.

Upon revealing his true power of healing, he declared that his name was Saint Raphael the Archangel, one of the seven archangels of the kingdom of God. Delivered by God to fulfill his earthly duties. Everyone kneeled before him in awe. They offered him earthly gifts, but he quickly refused. According to him, no amount of riches can repay the grace given by God. For such a reason, real people blessed with the gift of healing should not accept any form of gratitude from the least (such as a thank you) to the most (like money and other material things.) Because their reward awaits in the kingdom of God. After this, Saint Rafael the Archangel commanded them to thank God, for he will return to him. Upon going back to heaven, they arose and saw him no more. This scene tells us that we can only achieve God’s favor through sincere prayers and having good conduct here on earth.
In iconographic imagery, Saint Raphael the Archangel, as Azarias, carries a small box with medicaments. In some cases, there is a dog following both of them as they journey on. Some artworks also showcase the beauty of God’s creations wherein trees, plants, and other animals are present.

He is the patron saint of blind, physically sick patients, travelers, joyous meetings, physicians, nurses, and medical workers. He celebrates his feast together with Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel (September 29). He helps the sick through his prayer of healing, which is as follows:

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners.<
I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God” I humbly pray to you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body.

I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

So why don’t we trust the Lord’s power instead? In the hardships we encounter, we must not only rely on the things we see on the internet, especially when it comes to cures for the sick. We should use the technologies we have today to seek guidance in finding the exact prayers for our petitions. Like the prayer above, several patients suffering will surely be well in no time upon praying to Saint Raphael the Archangel. Never lose hope ,we can be kind, we can take care of each other. In times of crisis, all we need is love, trust, and faith with the Lord and His heavenly subjects above. There is nothing wrong with offering everything to Him. If you feel broken inside and out, physically and emotionally, remember; GOD HEALS through an Archangel known as ST. RAPHAEL!

The Protective Wings of our Guardian Angel

There are many stories in the bible and in history in which angels show their faithful fulfillment of the duty God has assigned them, and in their faithful service to man.

Who are the guardian angels?
In the company of God’s angels in heaven, the guardian angel is assigned to watch over a person who is given to him from the moment of his conception until his demise. The great St. Jerome mentioned “how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it”.

Angels are spirits in their natural state and form. They do not have real flesh like human’s but they are able to manifest and interact with man in a supernatural way with God’s permission. As recorded in the Bible, Tobit traveled with St. Raphael the Archangel on his journey and even cured his blind father. Likewise, two angels went to Lot to see the condition of Sodom and Gommorah.

In the history of the Catholic church, guardian angels appeared to saints and had miracles and special favors of guiding them.

San Isidore the Laborer, despite the hard work on the field as a farmer always attend the Holy Mass. On one occasion his wealthy landowner saw an angelic being farming his land while St. Isidore is at mass. The angel accompanies the saint in his spiritual and temporal work.

In 1916 Fatima, Portugal, even before the Blessed Virgin of Fatima appeared to the three young shepherds, the Angel of Portugal appeared. The angel taught the three children to pray for sinners and also received Holy Communion.

Since they are from heaven, they have this natural radiance and light. As Saint Faustina experienced: “I saw an angel standing on every church we passed, but surrounded by a light which was paler than that of the spirit who was accompanying me on the journey, and each of these spirits who were guarding the churches bowed his head to the spirit who was near me.” According to the saint, he always sees the angel with her anywhere she goes.

Guardian angels are tasked to watch over us all the time, even in our sleep. They present our prayers to God. Enlightens even pious souls like the story of St. Gemma Galgani:
“One evening, when I was suffering more than usual, I was complaining to Jesus and telling him that I would not have prayed so much if I had known that He was not going to cure me, and I asked Him why I had to be sick this way. My angel answered me as follows: If Jesus afflicts you in your body, it is always to purify you in your soul. Be good.”

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, a mystic stigmatist lived with illness and also carried Christ-like wounds. His angel appeared to her and brought a flower from the Garden of Eden that Christ Himself asked Him to give her. The angel instructed to put it in a vase with water for awhile and drink the water from it. The saint was healed and the water was also used to give to other sick nuns.

Angels also protect us from the dangers we may face everyday. St. Therese of Lisieux said: “Jesus has placed near you an Angel from Heaven who is always looking after you; he carries you in his hands lest your foot strike against a stone.”

We do not see them but they really are there to keep us out of danger, especially those that can destroy our souls.

There is a limit to their ability despite the fact that they are from heaven because of human’s free will. They are still given the power to save us and they know our weaknesses. That is why St. John Bosco advised us, “When tempted, invoke your Angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: He trembles and flees at the sight of your Guardian Angel.”

God loves us so much that each of us has a guardian angel. It mirrors how great His love for us that each of His creations are given the same opportunity to be saved.

If we only fully understood this we would not forget to talk to them as we did when we were young. As we grow old and become busy we forget our fondness to our guardian angel. Still, they never forget us, they always guide and protect us. St. Bernard of Clairvaux said, “We should show our affection for the angels, for one day they will be our coheirs just as here below they are our guardians and trustees appointed and set over us by the Father.”

We still live in trying days during this pandemic. The challenges we face in our economy, health, and uncertain days takes a toll to our physical and mental health. During lockdowns many have been left alone, separated from loved ones, lost their jobs, and unwanted anxieties.

Let us strengthen our spiritual life through constant prayer and devotion and friendship with our angel. Hopefully, we remember what St. Padre Pio said. “For whomever is alone, there is his guardian angel.”

Prayer to your guardian angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Saint Gabriel, the Archangel

The Archangel Saint Gabriel is one of the seven archangels of God. He, alongside with the other Archangels, serve God and His people, as well as, are part of the celestial army. He is renowned as “The Messenger of God” since he always brings good news from the Lord every time he appears through visions to fortunate human-beings here on earth. This fact about him is very much related to the true meaning of the word “angel”. It is derived from the Greek word “aggeslos,” meaning “messenger.” With this, Saint Gabriel the Archangel is truly a wise messenger of the Lord.

His name “Gabriel” means “Man of God” in Hebrew. His name may also mean “God has shown might”. He together with archangels Saint Michael and Saint Raphael, are commonly stated in the holy scriptures found in the Bible. (Saint Michael (Revelation 12: 7-9), Saint Raphael (Tobit 12:15), and Saint Gabriel (Luke 1: 27-28). In art and sacred imagery, he is often times depicted holding a spear found in his right hand. Also, a mirror of jasper having the symbol “X” (which in Greek, is the first letter of the word “Christ”) in his left hand is seen. This mirror implies a message that the prudence of God is mystery and is unknown.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel’s feast day is originally celebrated every 24th of March (after being included in the Roman Calendar in 1921), the day before the Feast of the Annunciation. But in 1969, his feast day was changed. Instead, we celebrate his feast day together with the feast days of Archangels Michael and Raphael, every 29th of September. He is the Patron saint of Messengers, Postal Workers and Communication Workers.

In relation to the points earlier regarding Him being part of the sacred writings in the Holy Bible, Saint Gabriel the Archangel has been a well-known celestial being who emerged to different individuals or religious personas, both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. He is sometimes mentioned by his own name whenever he does an apparition to God’s subjects. In some cases, like when He appeared to Moses, to Mary’s parents, Saints Anne and Joaquim, to the shepherds when Jesus has been given birth by Mary in the manger, to the woman who approached Jesus’ Tomb bringing myrrh, and to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane to make Jesus stronger and more prepared to face future challenges He’ll face, He was unnamed and was thought to be an unknown or ordinary angel of God.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel had done a lot of significant things in relation to the characters in the Bible. It is believed that he trained the Prophet Moses in the wild for him to be able to compose and create the Book of Genesis. He also exposed to Prophet Daniel the coming of Jesus, our Savior (Daniel 8:15-26 and 9:21-27.) In addition to that, he even revealed to Saint Joachim and his spouse, Saint Anne, that Saint Anne will have a baby. Here, they were informed that they will be the parents of the Virgin Mary. Another is that Saint Gabriel the Archangel told Zachariah information on the birth of Saint John the Baptist. (Luke 1: 10-20.)

The Significance of the Prayer to St. Michael in the Modern Society

Christians are born for combat

- Pope Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum, 1891

Saint Michael the Archangel is the head of all the angels of God. He leads God’s celestial army, helps individuals at the hour of their death, and most especially, protects God’s people against the evil forces and acts of Satan. With these, alongside other significant reasons, the Catholic church created and dedicated a special prayer to honor him, “The Prayer to Saint Michael”. But why did the Catholic church make this prayer and what is its message? How is this relevant to what is happening in our world at present?

On the 1st of October 1884, Pope Leo XIII experienced an extremely frightening and mysterious encounter as he stood facing the altar after presiding a mass in his private chapel. Pope Leo XIII claimed that he heard voices, and those were not just ordinary voices. He believed he heard the voices of the Lord and Satan having a conversation on Satan’s capability of destroying the church within 75 to 100 years, if given the chance by Jesus. Our good Lord permitted Satan to try such act. After hearing these, he immediately went to his office and wrote a special prayer dedicated to Saint Michael. As he completed his composition, he told his staff to make this prayer known by all the people in the Catholic church. As this prayer spread throughout the world and was passed from generation to generation, many households and individuals recited this prayer to Saint Michael. Despite having gone through numerous challenges and changes in the church, such as its discontinuation in 1964, this prayer remained an important prayer from the time Pope Leo XIII wrote it to its revival 30 years after it ceased to be recited. Unfortunately, with the passing of time, this powerful prayer is slowly becoming unfamiliar to many people.

“The Prayer to Saint Michael” has a lot of significance. It is used to rebuke and defeat the plans of the devil, protects us from harm, and most especially, will defend us in the day of battle or the final judgement through the powerful intercession of Saint Michael. It conveys a message of faith and hope, and gives us the strength to overcome distress, hardships, and challenges that we experience like natural disasters and the dreaded Corona Virus pandemic. All these and more are the reasons why our church would like all Catholics to recite this prayer. Though only some people remain faithful to God and the company of his holy people, the Church Triumphant, let us all humble ourselves and return to Him in prayer especially now that we are experiencing quagmires. Now is the perfect time to light a candle, to kneel and pray the Holy Rosary, and to ask the protection and guidance of Saint Michael the Archangel by praying the powerful “‘Prayer to Saint Michael”. If we will all just follow and obey, all evils will be defeated and we will see the triumph of holiness in our life and in the whole world.
